Rida charged at Samui, from what he could see, she didn’t use a weapon, and was a hand to hand combatant like he was, the robes she wore were baggy and made it harder to read her moves though, and with that flash freezing thing she displayed before he knew it would be dangerous to take a hit. He knew he’d have to fight smart and not leave her openings to hit him.

Rida threw a punch as he got close, his fist burst into flame as he drew it back, and as he threw the punch and travelled forward the wave of flames he normally launched forward blew back around him, making his whole body a flaming spear, and easily covering him from a counterattack.

Samui didn’t try and stand up against the attack, jumping backwards away from Rida. While she flew backwards she analyzed the situation “he uses hakuda as well, his zanpakto is in shikai, and is fire element. The heat of his shikai can cancel out my ice, but that means my ice can cancel him out as well.” She thought, landing on the ground, then sonidoing back as Rida tried to close in again.

Rida was thinking about the situation as well “our abilities cancel out, meaning the first person to score a direct hit is liable to win. Based on what I’ve seen of her, that’ll be tough, she’s analytical to the point of being emotionless, baiting, intimidating, and feints aren’t going to work, plus she’ll be harder to read and will see any opening I leave. She’s probably analyzing me right now, that’s why she’s running”

Samui kept retreating “I have the advantage here, but I have to be careful, if he hits me I’ll have to release to survive, I can’t do that near Zasshu or the great garganta, so I need to draw him away.” She thought, now instead of dodging backwards she turned and sonidod at full speed away from the archway.

Rida glanced back at the arch, he wanted to keep the fight close to the device they planned to destroy so he could easily attack it if the fight dragged on too long, but he didn’t appear to have a choice in the matter. Cursing silently, Rida shunpod after Samui.

Soon both combatants were on a wide open plateau, a good mile away from the archway. Samui turned as she slid to a stop, a blue cero charged in her hand. Rida was still in mid shunpo, and wouldn’t be able to dodge, so Samui fired her cero directly at him.

Rida saw the cero coming, but couldn’t stop his momentum fast enough to change course, so he decided to go with it, meeting the cero head on with a punch, and triggered his shikai’s ability to make his punches explosive as he did so, countering the cero with a blast of his own, which also allowed him to stop moving.

Samui jumped through the smoke of the explosions, having known that it was Rida’s only option to avoid a hit from her cero. She burst through the smoke with a spinning roundhouse kick.

Rida stepped back, avoiding the roundhouse kick, and was about to go for a counter when he saw Samui’s arm coming down for a hook punch. Rida waited for the punch to fall short so he could counter after it, but was surprised to see Samui use her momentum to rotate her spin from horizontal to vertical, coming out of her roundhouse kick with an axe kick.

Rida sidestepped the strike, moving to Samui’s left to attack from the side, but Samui used her foot that had kicked the ground as a pivot point, spinning into another hook punch to drive Rida back into the air. As Rida flew backward he noted that the axe kick had frozen the ground in a 3 meter radius from the point of impact. He then tapped into another of his shikai abilities that he had discovered during training. His zanpakto had turned out to actually be a fire and earth type, due to its volcanic theme. As a result of this Rida was able to determine that the ice extended 1 meter underground as well.

Samui followed her combo with another cero, which Rida spun out of the way of. “She’s not planning on letting me launch any counterattacks, she must’ve realized she has the advantage so long as she is on the offensive since I can’t read her moves” he thought “I can’t dodge forever, she’s too good, and we both know the first one of us to land a hit is gonna have a major edge”

Rida landed on the ground, then sprung to the side as Samui kicked where he had landed. Rida used the moment to spin into a roundhouse kick of his own, which Samui used both arms to block. The blow struck with immense force, causing a small shockwave of displaced air as it connected with the block. Samui grimaced as the force sent her flying back. She was too lightweight to stand up to such power, but she was thankful it had been a kick and not one of Rida’s explosive punches.

Rida used the time that Samui was knocked back to charge in and throw a punch. Samui slid to a stop and brought up one arm, knocking Rida’s blow to the side, then throwing her own punch with her other arm.

Rida ducked as he drew his arm back and went for a cross punch at Samui’s gut, but she gracefully spun out of the way and swept her leg out for a low kick. Rida evaded this by going into a jump front kick, driving Samui back a few steps as she avoided the blow.

Both combatants took the opportunity to jump back and regroup. Rida eyed Samui warily, trying to plan out what to do. “This is going nowhere. She’s faster than I am, it’s easy for her to evade me and keep me on the defensive, I could overpower her in a direct contest, but she’s not stupid enough to do that willingly.”

Rida glanced to the frozen ground by the two places Samui had struck in their exchanges. Examining them both. “Exactly a 3 meter radius, with 1 meter penetration, both cases” he thought “seems like the total frozen area is consistent, with Konnamura-taicho she froze him completely though, so I bet if the effect can’t expand to a 3 meter radius that part’s converted to penetration. That means…”

Samui charged again, firing off two cero to keep Rida busy while she closed in. Rida evaded the ceros and planted his feet, preparing himself. Rida’s eyes narrowed in focus, he’d have to time this perfectly, and if he failed he’d probably be open.

Samui closed in, going for a straight forward palm strike to start off, she’d let Rida take the easy dodge , then move into another series of kicks when he tried to counter.
Rida waited until Samui was just outside one meter away, then raised a hand as if lifting something.

Samui’s eyes widened in shock as a 6 meter wide, 1 meter thick wall of rock rose from the ground between her and Rida, intercepting her strike and freezing completely. “He figured out the range of my ability!?” she thought in a panic

Rida smiled slightly as his other hand burst into fire and he threw the punch he had set up, his fist connected with the frozen ground he had caused and unleashed an explosion and a wave of flame at the same time.

Samui screamed as the wall before her exploded, thousands of shards of rock pelted her, shredding her robes and cutting her up pretty badly as well, despite her best efforts to shield herself, and then came the fire, engulfing her and burning her from head to toe. The force of the explosion sent her flying back out of the flames and crashing to the ground, landing on her back and sliding along the ground, causing more cuts on her back.

Rida looked over at Samui, who now struggled to get back to her feet. His ability to control and read the earth had come in quite useful. “Guess I should thank Urahara for the training, if I’d fought this fight before I would’ve been in some serious trouble”

Samui wore a one piece suit under her robes, it wasn’t much, but as her ruined robes fell away she was thankful for the small amount of dignity it preserved. “None… of the… reports… covered… that…” she wheezed.

“It’s new” Rida said “I developed it over the past month, you couldn’t possibly have known about it”

Samui got to her feet, her arms and legs were both bleeding heavily, and she stumbled forward “this… isn’t… over” she hissed as she reached behind her and drew a short knife from a sheath on her back. “Freeze… ventisca”

Rida cursed, he’d forgotten about ressurecion, and since releasing healed all the injuries of the arrancar, he was back to square one.

Samui was engulfed in a cloud of freezing air and ice, swirling around her for several moments before dispersing, freezing the ground for 10 meters in all directions as it did. Icy wind still swirled along the ground, but now Samui was revealed. She looked almost exactly the same, but now her body appeared to be made of ice.

Rida immediately began to move as Samui raised an arm, he could tell already that this was bad.

“I am Samui, the 9th daichiken” Samui said “now die.” From her hand a vortex of freeing clouds burst out, blasting through the area Rida had been standing in moments before and turning everything it touched to ice.

Rida kept running as Samui fired vortex after vortex at him, he tried to close in, but the attacks were too fast and deadly for him to make any headway. In fact he was actually being driven further away with every attack. “Tch…” he said as his hands burst into flame, throwing his first punch Rida countered Samui’s next attack with his flames, but found that he was being overpowered and was forced to use his other hand to up his power in order to match Samui.

“Damn” Rida said “at this rate I’m gonna lose for sure”

Samui didn’t let up, firing two vortexes at once this time, one from each hand. Rida leaped over the attacks and countered with a flame punch. As the flames neared Samui the icy wind on the ground around her picked up, becoming another vortex of freezing air and ice around her, blocking the attack with ease. From the vortex a dark blue cero shot out, nailing Rida in the chest and exploding. Rida was blasted back to the ground, where he tried to recover and land on his feet, but he slipped on the ice and fell on his face.

The vortex around Samui cleared and she aimed at Rida firing a vortex to finish him off. Rida got back to one knee, but the spread and speed of the attack was too large to dodge at this point. “Damn, got no choice but to break it out” Rida thought “I owe ya big Urahara”

Rida’s eyes glowed red and his reiatsu spiked “BANKAI!” he shouted

Samui was shocked when, seemingly from nowhere, a tornado of fire burst into life around Rida, the force of the flames spinning around him tore up the ground around them, creating a cloud of broken rock and rapidly melting ice around it.

The flame tornado expanded outward, slowly dispersing and revealing a terrifying sight.
Rida stood in the middle of a circle of scorched ground, clad in full plate armor made of the same molten rock of his shikai gauntlets. Behind him, a 100 foot tall golem made of pure lava rose up, As Samui watched in horror, the dark spots of the lava came together, forming the image of a skeleton in the golem as it looked down on her.

“Kazan no Akuma” Rida said as the flame tornado dissipated at last.

Samui stared at the golem, and for the first time that she could remember, she felt emotion. It was a sinking feeling in her gut, her arms began to tremble, and she took an involuntary step backwards. “What… is this…?” she asked herself “is this… fear?”

Rida raised an arm and pointed at Samui, and the golem began to lift an arm.

Samui gasped and shot her vortexes at Rida “STAY AWAY!” she screamed

Rida drew back his fist and threw a punch, unleashing a wave of flame far more powerful than he had ever produced in shikai, the flames met Samui’s attacks and canceled them out. Meanwhile the golem had raised a fist and was now punching down towards Samui.

Samui panicked, firing her vortexes at the incoming fist to try and freeze it, but her blizzards didn’t even slow the incoming fist down. With a scream, Samui called forth a vortex of freezing air around her so large that Rida had to shunpo back to avoid getting caught up in it.

The golem’s fist plowed through the vortex unfazed, and crashed into Samui, the vortex dispersed, and for a brief instant Samui’s body could be seen disintegrating inside of the golem’s fist. Then she was gone, leaving nothing behind.

Rida bowed solemnly “well fought, 9th daichiken” he said “I’m afraid that I was simply a bad matchup for you. You may be my foe, but I hope in your next life you can learn emotions other than fear. Rest in peace.”
Oh yeah, Rida finally got to be a badass, and I got to do a full fledged hakuda smackdown in this fanfic. Heck.Yeah.

Personally I love this chapter, I think it was a well balanced fight between a good matchup of foes. And I love how it turned out, even though it took me way longer to write than I had hoped.
